The Client

Radley College is a highly esteemed independent boarding school situated in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The school has a rich history dating back to 1847 when it was founded by William Sewell, a fellow of Exeter College, Oxford. The aim of the school was to provide a classical education for boys in the Anglican tradition, and it has continued to uphold this tradition to this day.
Over the years, Radley College has become known for its academic excellence and holistic approach to education, which emphasizes not just academic achievement but also the development of character and the fostering of a strong sense of community. The school’s beautiful campus, with its impressive Gothic buildings and extensive grounds, provides an inspiring and nurturing environment for its students.

The Project

‘Radley 175’ was a momentous occasion that celebrated the 175th anniversary of Radley College’s founding. The celebration was a year-long event that began in 2022 and culminated in a week-long series of festivities in July of that year.
The celebrations included a variety of events and activities that showcased the school’s history, academic excellence, and community spirit. These included art exhibitions, musical performances, drama productions, academic lectures, and sporting events.
One of the highlights of the Radley 175 celebrations was the unveiling of a commemorative sculpture that was created by the renowned artist Sir Antony Gormley. The sculpture, titled “Habitat,” is a striking piece that depicts a human figure in a seated position and was inspired by the natural environment surrounding the school.
Another notable event during Radley 175 was the opening of the new Science and Technology Centre, which is a state-of-the-art facility that provides cutting-edge resources for students studying science, engineering, and technology.

The Brief

In preparation for ‘Radley 175’, along with PO’SH Creative agency, Graphic Arts Group was tasked to create a visual representation of the rich history of the school within the main link corridor. This extremely well used corridor is a popular connective route through the college by staff, alumni, visitors, and students, and was to serve as a visual reminder of the achievements, inspirational stories, and future potential of the college.
With over 150ft of usable space, the large scale installation required significant collaboration with both the creative agency involved in the design and the Radley College Estates team to ensure that the solution provided would deliver the ingenuity, exactitude and attention to detail that the college has personified throughout it’s 175 year history.

The Solution

After a period of collaboration with both the creative agency and the Radley College estates team, the definitive design was agreed, and Graphic Arts Group put the final solution into manufacture.
Spanning the full length of the impressive 150ft corridor, the inspiring wall graphic timelines many of the key events, achievements and people that make up the rich tapestry of the school’s history. From events that led to the formation of school, through to recent achievements and modern developments in the way the school interacts with the local community, the Radley College 175th Anniversary Timeline is a unique blend of inspirational quotes, eye-catching imagery, and historical photography.

The Result

Printed and installed by Graphic Arts Group within just 2 weeks of receiving the final artwork, the result was created using Digimura Premium wallpaper, a heavy-duty fire rated wall covering that is suitable for long term commercial installations. With vivid colour printing, accurate visual representation of both graphic images, text, and photography, alongside a highly durable finish designed for high-traffic public spaces, the resulting installation was the perfect solution to celebrate and communicate the historical achievements of the last 175 years at Radley College.
This striking installation demonstrates both the technical expertise and emotional understanding of how to communicate such a historically important centrepiece of the school. Helping students, alumni, visitors, and staff to immerse themselves in the story of the college and discover something new and unique about their school each time they pass through the main corridor.
